I meet up with Doug Niblack, owner of Niblack Events, and we were able to chat & experience his passion for food. Doug has been in love with dining since he was very young, somehow always knowing he was his happiest in the kitchen. At 17 he started washing dishes in a small, nationally recognized fine dining restaurant becoming immediately addicted. There were many things that drew him in-

“ It was the combination of the smells, sounds of merriment, contentment, and appreciation, it was the camaraderie of the cooks and servers, and ultimately, it was the choreography of the dance that happens every night in kitchens and dining rooms across the world.”

What are the main meal options when considering your catering needs?

First is a Buffet Style, this is perfect for large groups with a large spectrum of palates and preferences. Guests will have the ability to peruse an elegant spread of delectables in a build your own style that is sure to please everyone that has the capacity to enjoy good food.

Next would be Family Style Dining, this style is for the more intimate and deliberate weddings.  Family style offers the intimacy of breaking bread with those at your table, an increased level of service from a highly trained server who is dedicated to each table, and the ability for the planner to design hand crafted dishes, displays, and pairings that the whole group may enjoy.  What this style lacks in individual personalization, it makes up for in service and structure.

Finally offering a Plated Service, the most intimate and service based style of group dining.  The plated menus range from 3 to 9 courses served to each guest, prepared and plated with all of the Chef's individuality and skill.

“The plated service is our favorite style as it highlights our abilities and gives us the chance to refine our passion in it's purest form, fine dining, a chance for each guest to escape their lives and be waited on as their full attention is where it should be, on the meal, the ambiance, and the joining of two special people.”

What were the hardships of venturing out on your own?

My biggest struggle is easy to name:  Finding the right people for the right projects. I think almost every small, service based business owner would agree, people are invaluable and in the end I would much rather have the perfect employee over the perfect client.

When not working on his business Doug makes every effort to be in nature.  He believes that all the fashion and dining trends are reverting back into a holistic and natural place that we all deep down know we belong to.

Nature inspires him and as a hobby forages for food and medicine with his Holistic Nutritionist partner.  Also enjoy surfing, backpacking and anything that gets them out in the world and grateful for the air they breathe.

“The past few years I became infatuated with catering and large events, and after climbing the corporate ladder in a couple companies, I realized that in order to create a company that went beyond guest experience into progressive community and global perspective, I would just have to do it myself.  I knew this challenge was biting off more than I could chew, but how do we ever learn from something we know we can do.”

Tips from the Beauty Behind, The Lash & Beauty Lab

LashLab-2.jpg

The Lash & Beauty Lab is all about beauty and is dedicated to pursuing excellence with in their services. This haven of beauty began with the art of eyelash extensions and has since grown into skincare with skin treatments & soon permanent makeup.

This Beauty Lab supports everyone who walks through their door ready to take the lash or skin care plunge, with the main goal of creating a warm environment not just for their clients but eachother.  They recognize the clients ultimate focus, but their goal is to exceed those expectations, while still standing behind the work.

LashLab-13.jpg

The being behind the magic of this Lab is Cheri Wroblewski, with a diverse background including multiple certifications, training, and work with well-known celebrities, she received her certificate in Esthetics from The International School of Beauty and Advanced Certified Technician through Xtreme Lashes.

"What really sparked my interest was while I was in my first few years of business running Lash Boutique in NY I had worked at a Medical Clinic Spa which introduced me to more medical services. There I met a dermatologist who told me that I would see results through chemical peels. I since have done chemical peels every month (maybe skipping a few here and there) but for almost 10 years. I saw a change in my skin in the first year of trying chemical peels that I felt I never saw with just facials. That started my research in product and skin services that are more result orientated."

"Lashes are instant gratification. My favorite is when the clients looks in the mirror for the first time and say how much they "LOVE" it. I get to make women and men feel more beautiful and I love to make people feel good.  I get to work with amazing women all day.  Not only are my girls who work for me amazing I get to see all my clients on a regular every 2-4 weeks.  We become close and it feels like family."

Any advice for  brides before the big day?

Oh my gosh I love this question!!! Im also getting married soon so these are all the things I'm doing myself... ;) I love getting brides in before the big day. Of course get your lashes done thats number one!!! These will save you from any of those teary moments and having to worry about which as we know makes mascara slide down your face or can make your lash strips pop off in the corner. Lash strips can not only be a bother they are extremely uncomfortable and damaging. If you only want to get lash extensions for the big day then I would suggest coming in at least 1 month before the day. This was you get a full set and one fill touch-up appointment. The fill being the appointment where you can change anything about your lash look. IE longer, thicker, more dramatic. No one ever regrets lashes and especially after they see themselves in their photos. Next for your skin and If you do little of all these services or pick one and do a series you will see results and be thankful when the day comes and your skin is glowing. I would personally start with chemical peels as far in advance before the big day. A year would be ideal but even 6 months will give you amazing results. Microneedling 4-6 treatments will smooth out your skins texture, lighten hyper pigmentation, and my favorite it helps acne scarring. LED light should be on your list too!! This is a non invasive treatment that uses light waves to heal. One treatment and you'll seeing your skin glowing, imagine 4 or more before the big day. You will have no regrets with these services. You'll only regret not doing them!!

What are some tips to keep your skin glowing in harsh weather?

Again I cant say this enough but chemical peels are the best! They will help take off the top layer of your skin that start to looks dull in the harsh weathers. You will get the fresh skin that will allow all the products you use at home to work deep in your skin not just sit on top of the skin. My favorite product is Hyaluronic acid serum. Its a humectant which means it holds its weight in water. That keeps your skin hydrated more the even a moisturizer. All serums really. They have such a high water content so this parred with chemical peels during the winter will give you that dewy face look you get in the warmer months.

Any suggestions for first time Lash users?

Lashes are simple. They are so easy to maintain. Just follow your after care instructions. Always clean your eyelids and lashes with a remover that is formulated. The big thing is to make sure that whatever products touch the lashes themselves are formulated for the extensions. IE...makeup remover and mascara.

What's a big no no for skin care?

Not washing your face at night. Skipping SPF. Another really big no no is not using a retinoid or retinol. It is still to this day the best anti aging skin care cream. I tell all my clients that if they aren't using any form of a retinoid they are actually doing a disservice to their skin.

As for future plans Cheri is looking to expand services, and a possible 2nd location. She is also working on her very own lash care products for lash extensions

"My happy place is when my girls who work for me are happy. I have surrounded myself with women who are supportive and non drama. My happy place is my studio. I love going to work. My girls and I get along so well. We laugh all the time. We care about each other. My happy place is work and home. I'm really lucky."

How happy are you that 2018 is finally here?

Tumewater-28.jpg

I know I am, but is not just the excitement of a new year, there is also some relief, and even a little fear.  After the hustle and bustle of the holidays I am grateful to take off this first week of the year, more for my own mental sanity, but also to reflect. My goals and inspirations are written out, now its time to take them in, renew and get ready for what adventures may come. Sometimes while in the flow of life we forget to stand back and see how far we have traveled, I am definitely guilty of that myself. I constantly work and am always trying to step my game up, which is a great quality to have, but that comes from the desire of wanting more time and to be more financially stable. I have no problem with hard work but I also want to work smarter and don't want to wake up one day noticing I was working so hard that I missed time with people I love & experiences I wanted to explore.

Each year I like to implement new positive elements into my life, not just to progress in my  business but to progress as a person, in general. Now lets rewind back to that little bit of fear I was talking about and try not to think about it in a negative way. Every time I have done something that has been a frighting to even think about I have not regretted it. It doesn't mean it always works out but what I learn from it is what was needed. Stepping out of my comfort zone is always a part of that, it can be scary but I now let the fear fuel me!

In the spirit of the new year I wanted to share a few of my own goals, I like to focus on three main elements that make me whole, my mind, body and soul.  As for my body, health is a big part of life and I feel it connects so much to how your business runs, as well as how you feel. The last few years I have cut meat out of my diet, as well as  trying to improve my eating habits overall. I grew up loving junk food, I mean I secretly still do, but while learning more about the food we eat I have changed my bad habits little by little. I now feel healthier and confident in taking more processed items out of my diet this year, which may be a challenge as I love my treats. But this gives me a great chance to try new recipes and make a few new ones of my own, which I hope to share with you in 2018. As for soul, you can interpret that in many ways but as a human I feel we are all naturally spiritual. This year I want to help more and have such an affection for animals so it was obvious to me volunteering my time with them would be where to start. Using the skills I have is a great way to help them find homes and who doesn't want to take photos of cute animals?  Now for the big one, mind!  My main business goal this year is to feel ok with wanting more (thanks to Nina Roberts), which is really a series of several small goals, but I am excited to say my first act of putting myself out there in the new year will be to hold my first boudoir marathon in the Pacific Northwest. The studio is booked for February 4th and I will be sharing more detail very soon, so stay tune on how you can secure your spot!

So heres your reminder, take a minute to silence your mind, because we all know its much needed. Think about what worked and what didn't, not just in your business but in your personal life, all these things are connected and should be treated as so. Instead of repeating those cycles that are no longer working for you, pivot and re-aim, wanting to strive doesn't end with the idea of just putting your head down and working. I am continuously learning and as I take this time to reflect, I hope you do too. Please leave a comment or drop me a line. I would love to hear about your new goals or maybe just have a chat about your own journey!
